So let's get this blog started off right with a post on homemade kefir! I wonder who else out there makes this wonderful stuff. A good friend of mine taught me how to make it. If you want more info. on kefir go here.
What you will need to make this delicious replacement for your yogurt:
-kefir starter (these can be found in some natural grocery stores/markets or ordered online here
Don't be scared of the price. You can re-use the grains many many times before you would need new ones.
-milk (preferably organic and raw if you can find it otherwise as unprocessed as you can get it. Non-homogenized, ect.)
-mason jars
This is what the kefir grains will look like after mixing the starter with a bit of milk and letting them sit at room temperature for about 1-2 days. Don't be scared of them!
Kefir is extremely easy to make and is very beneficial to your digestive system. In the morning a lot of times I make either a green smoothie (a fruit smoothie with added spinach, kale, ect.) or a kefir smoothie (a fruit smoothie with added kefir and cold pressed organic coconut oil). Voila! A wonderful healthy energizing breakfast!
Joy, this is for you! :)

Sometimes when I read things that you like to eat I wonder to myself how it is that we are such good friends!!!!! :)
I love you and your healthy ways!
Hey kiddo! I love you blog but have no right to be visiting this one... I'm going to continue to walk through your adoption journey with you and if you do a post about healthy queso dip I'll be right back! :)
This is a great idea and I know there are tons of health minded people that will really love it and find it a great resource/arena to exchange ideas.
Kudos!

amy and lori, you crack me up!
We had Kefir when I was a kid in Africa, but it was more like a drink, like lemonade, a bit bubbly, not sweet and very thirst quenching.
I am surprised that milk makes it in your book, Joy-o, and non homogenized milk too, with all the puss, and the blood, and the dried cow poop that got stuck to the cow's nipple... :=) - I know it's not called nipple in cow lingo. It's called some gross word. Uter? Utter? Oter?
Anyway.
My question is, though, what do your family eat, as a family, do they have the same diet as you, or do they eat differently?
Carine, that Kefir sounds different then the one I make. No lemoness. :) It is more liquidy then yogurt. Without trying to get too scientific, yogurt contains left turning bacteria and kefir contains right turning bacteria. Supposedly, babies and nursing mothers are suppose to stay away from left turning bacteria. The kefir's right turning bacteria is more beneficial in your digestive tract. Wow, now I am officially a nerd.
And thanks for the blood and pus reminder. So sick!! We actually don't drink any milk still. Just eat raw dairy.
oh ya, and the girls eat what i eat. jesse eats a bit different sometimes.
YUM! We culture our raw milk with Fil Miolk...have you ever heard of it...I think it's a sweedish version of kefir, but it's even easier to make. All you need is a few tablespoons of a previous batch to start a new one! We LOVE it...although 2 of my kids can't have any dairy right now at all. But, we use it instead of sour cream, yogurt, and we even make "chocolate milk" by adding a couple drops of dark chocolate stevia in a glass...YUM!!!
Ok, I have GOT to stop commenting on all your posts, I just seriously can't believe how much we have in common! You'll have to teach me how to categorize my posts so people can just click on "Clean Your Plate" to read about that stuff!
I don't know you but I think what you are doing is awesome...
I like to make a smoothie in the morning with organic bananas, rejuvelac, sometimes kefir, sometimes mango, sometimes spiralina, often powdered maca root.
I also make/grow Kombucha
I found your blog because I was trying to find out if my kefir was norming looking and smelling... I have just made my first kefir (with goats milk)...
thanks for sharing your blog!!
Cheers;
