So I've done a lot of research on supplements and boy can it get confusing and frustrating. It's hard to know sometimes which ones are legit and which ones are unnecessary or even bad for our kids. Here is what the girls get daily:
-a quality probiotic suitable for their ages. I like Baby's Jarro-Dophilus which is good for kids 4 and under.
-a good quality Krill oil. I like the one you can order from Mercola. For small children who can't swallow capsules you can break it open and squeeze it onto their food.
-Sweet Echinacea. I don't give this to them daily but just as an immunity booster once a week or so. Then if they are sick they get it more often.
-A tablespoon of cold pressed organic coconut oil. I usually try and mix it into something, like a smoothie for instance. We actually use this oil for MANY things but I might get into that in another post.
So that is it! I really should be checking if they are low on zinc and giving that to them as well if they need it. But I haven't gotten that far yet.
I would love to hear what others give their children!
Joy, this is for you! :)

Ha!
Actually, I love to read about what you use for an immunity booster.. I might just look into this!
OH and the other day I was looking at the Flinstone multivitamin for kids. You used to give Alivia that because I brought some over to you in Switzerland! Are they bad now? I was going to buy them because I thought you endorsed them.
Amy, I never gave them to Alivia. I took them when I when I was pregnant with Nora unfortunately because I couldn't handle the pre-natals. It wasn't until after I took them for a while that I actually looked at the ingredients. Stupid me!! Oh well, Nora is pretty normal. :) But yes, get some Echinacea. Whenever someone is sick in the house I make sure everyone is taking it. It seems to help quite a bit. It also helps shorten the length of time to get over a virus too.
So I was trying to remember why I was taking vitamins in the first place since I never take a multi-vitamin. That was almost 3 years ago so it's hard to remember. But if you can remember at that time I was eating only a vegan diet and even though I was eating a really balanced vegan diet I ended up being tested and was pretty deficient in a handful of areas. I was also breastfeeding Alivia and pregnant with Nora. i couldn't handle pregnancy vitamins. I guess I was desparate to get my iron and stuff up. I still can't believe I took those for a while. :) :)
I'm missing out, what's up with Flintstones?
ohhhh I remember now. I remember you wanted the ones with extra iron.... you vegan head.
Umm... Should we even talk about the frailty that was YOU approximately 3 years ago! Frail... you were. Poor thing.
Amy...yes, all 100 lbs. you practically had to hold my head up for me. :)
carine, you don't give the kids flinstones do you? the vitamin quality is totally bad but the worst part is that they have sucralose in the (aka splenda) which is just as horrible as any other artificial sweetner out there.
i think i only have 4 readers on this blog so i feel like i'm having conversations with you guys. :)
I am here, I just found this little secret blog of yours! And I am pretty sure I will love this, so keep 'em coming!!
OO OOO OO! So I haven't checked this little secret blog for awhile.
My mom was a big nutrition head and I still have the correct vitamin E ingrained in my head. Most kid vitamins have the bad vitamin E. LOL! Yeah that things I remember.
I'm intrigued with what you give the girls. We use echinacea alot here and we all take a pro-biotic. I think I need to look into an age appropriate one, didn't know there was a difference. OOPS!
I think you need to talk about Krill oil and the benefits of Coconut oil. I just ordered Coconut oil through a co-op here but I'm using it to make my own body butter.
YEAH!!! I'm so excited to have found you! :) I have an entire post dedicated to coconut oil and it's benefits...check it out. http://mercymatzohmacncheese.blogspot.com/2008/04/clean-your-plate-step-2-good-fatsbad.html
so i had wanted to chime in on this some time ago but haven't had the time...so here it goes.
we give reid udo's oil 3.6.9. blend and/or flaxseed meal and a whey protein powder from cows that have not been treated with rbhg in his morning organic fruit smoothie (he's a picky eater but fruit is a fave). for vitamins i found a great product called child life essentails multi vitamin & mineral. it has no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners, and it's gluten & casein free..totally vegan. totally healthy. reid loves it & since it is liquid he thinks he's really cool when he gets to drink it out of the little medicine sized cup. :)
i do use baby's jarro-dophilus from time to time as well as a kid's echinacea blend.
i would love to get some more input from you about the krill oil & coconut oil. james said he has been doing some reading on it so i have some catching up to do.
thanks for keeping me on my toes!
