So my dear sweet Alivia has had digestion issues since birth. She had severe colic, severe reflux and diarrhea ALL the time. Never a normal poo. I've done SO much research and have tried everything to help her digestion. To aid her digestion every day she gets coconut oil, freshly ground flax (added to smoothie or oatmeal), a probiotic, chlorophyll, and recently I added digestive enzymes. If the digestive enzymes don't do the trick I need to take her to a naturopath. I had her do a strength test and of course the results were different then the blood test (which is of course not dependable) and food sensitvity test. What more can a girl do? :(

Ugh. Frustating for sure! Poor little dear!
I feel like Mal has so many issues that have to do with food allergies and such...and thus I don't really feel like a normal Dr is going to be much help...But man, the naturopath's are few and far between in the south!! Grr.
If only Yanik lived here! Which I hear they moved to WA finaly?! I bet that is exciting for you! Are her and Andy living anywhere near you guys?
Tara, yes, Andy and Yannick are moving close (well, 6 hours away, but much closer)! And she told me she has a ton of stuff she would like to add to this blog. :) We are excited about that. A little taste of our home in Switzerland.
Oh yay! We will eat up any good info she will share!!
Poor babe. I've added a few supplements for my kids and wouldn't ya know it we got strep throat shortly thereafter. Timing I tell ya.
Oh my! I'm very familiar with digestive issues for my kids as well. I have found Jordan Rubin's books really helpful. He talks a lot about the benefits of the things you are already doing but, even more! The book The Maker's Diet, The Great Physicians Rx for Children's Health, and others have been very helpful for me. But, in the end we've taken Eliot to a naturopath as well as chiropractors and even acupuncturists. Everyone is in agreement that he has Leaky Gut Syndrome. You can find lots of info on that, but basically he is not able to absorb or assimilate his nutrition due to inflammation and irritation of the intestines (probably due to his food allergies and other digestive issues). This causes a whole host of problems with digestion. But, you are doing the right thing. Constant diarrhea is screaming food allergies to me, but they could be sensitivities that wouldn't show up on an IgE panel that tests for severe and immediate reactions. You may want to find a chiro that will take blood and test it for the IgG and IgA panels which are for sensitivities and delayed reactions. Eliot's also had this and that's where we found his severe allergies to wheat, dairy, and egg. We're actually now testing for Celiac disease which very often manifests itself in tummy troubles like loose stools and other fun stuff! We've also done muscle testing but this blood panel tested for 164 foods which was just easier than muscle testing for that many foods! :)
May God bless you as you diligently find the cause of your baby's problems. You're doing the right thing. I've been trying to figure out Eliot's issues hardcore for a year now and I finally feel we have a great team of natural doctors and experts who are getting us the help and information we need! If you ever want any help with this road less traveled (i.e. healing our children naturally) let me know!
Blessings!
Emily
I am so sorry about that huge book I wrote, but the more I mull over your post, the more it sounds like a gluten intolerance...have you looked into it? You CAN heal her gut! But, a naturopath would be so helpful in getting her the right things for her little body. Klair labs has probiotics that surpass anything I've purchased at a health-food store...TONS of strains. The digestive enzymes will help too, but I'd be curious to see what happens when taken off all gluten...it's in a lot of things, but you can research that! Sorry to keep going with this, but I have done SOOO much research as well, and this is the first thing that has helped us!
Emily, thanks for the info. She actually doesn't have diarhea anymore. I think I wasn't very clear about that. She had constant diarrhea the first few months of her life. Since I was breastfeeding her I tried elimnating many things. That's when I started eating only raw dairy and cut out nuts (which she tested postive for allergies). The digestive enzymes are working really well so far. Her poo poo is looking much more normal (it usually looks horrible and has a foul smell...I know, too much information). I've thought for some time now that she had leaky gut. I'm going to continue the enzymes and we'll see if that helps. So far so good. I've always tried to keep the gluten to a minimum but the girls do eat it sometimes. It's in everything and I'm sure you already know. This is all just proof of what a couple generations of eating processed food does to the body. :(
That's exactly right! We are damaging our gene pool! Our poor kids can't eat foods that should be healthy for them like wheat and seeds and nuts, etc. Anyway there are some really amazing products out there that help heal Leaky Gut. We are using an intestinal health powder made with turmeric and other healing foods that is REALLY helping Eliot. We also do fermented veggies...which may help Alivia a lot. There's great recipes and ideas in the book Wild Fermentation. Fermented foods are very healing to leaky gut. Blessings on your journey to TRUE health for your children and family,
Emily
Emily, I have read a bunch of recipes in a book called "Nourishing Traditions" that teaches on how to ferment. The girls won't eat that stuff unfortunately. I may just make them until they do eat it. :) I have a good friend here who is a hardcore Weston Price follower. She almost died from Chron's. So she is an awesome resource for me. She ferments everything. I may try and have a fermenting party with her sometime and try and see if the girls will give in to eating them. I'd be interested in hearing which intestinal health powder you use.
Joy, I use RevitalX Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula. I think Natural Factors is the name brand. Metagenics makes the highest quality one, but it's very expensive. I think around 50 for two month's worth for Eliot as opposed to 30 for the one we have. I use half a scoop so it lasts longer and I put it in the blender with his probiotics, homemade almond milk, and frozen berries for a "smoothie" with breakfast. The taste takes getting used to, but he knows it's making him feel better. If I could I would put honey or something in it to make it sweeter. Also, as far as the fermented stuff, my kids like the pineapple and mango...sometimes fruit is easier to start with for kids. They also like the carrots now and I add sea veggies for extra iodine. I do the weston price stuff, though not so much meat. everything we buy is local, organic and grassfed. But, I can't afford nor can I stomach meat at every meal! :) But, we do lots of homemade broths in our food to compensate.
Hi Joy,
I was looking on here for probiotic info. The probiotic that was "prescribed" to us by a natural doc is a chewable and I am just suspicious of it. What ones would you recommend?
if you don't mind emailing me at heidiklop@cox.net--I would appreciate it!
Thanks!
